Folk songs are one of the unique cultural riches that define us. Passed down from generation to generation for centuries, they are a precious treasure reflecting our tastes, feelings, and way of life in their purest and truest form. There are several ways to present this treasure to other nations around the world. Perhaps the most important of these is to exemplify folk songs with polyphonic elements and to make these examples available on an international stage.
Piano accompaniment of folk songs can be done using many harmonization methods. The most preferred methods, which have been demonstrated with many examples before, are accompaniment with four-part harmony and harmonies based on classical Western music, or homophony, or in other words, accompaniment created through chords consisting of three-part intervals.
This book; This work is based on ternary harmony, but it also incorporates chords made with ninths, elevenths, thirteenths, diminished, half-diminished, and altered notes, alongside fundamental and seventh chords. In other words, it combines classical harmony with ample use of modern colors, resulting in more advanced accompaniments.
Seven Turkish folk songs from various modes have been accompanied for piano within the framework of the modern harmonization mentioned above, and the harmonization in each measure is explained in detail. Furthermore, to allow for the use of different vocal groups and to develop the ability to perform in other notes, the accompaniment examples are written in three notes: A, D, and E.
We hope this will be useful for all music students and music lovers interested in accompanying Turkish folk songs and seeking a broader perspective on this subject.
