Disasters are events that cause major changes in human and social life. Disaster response and disaster management are two important processes. Both processes have aspects that relate to the period before and after the disaster. Disaster preparedness is emphasized in both response and management. However, preparedness measures that do not draw on the knowledge, expertise, and experience gained from post-disaster experiences fail to achieve the desired impact in practice. In this context, reports prepared with an academic approach to identifying and solving problems during and after a disaster fill an important gap.
The earthquakes centered in Kahramanmaraş on February 6, 2024, negatively affected almost every aspect of community life. In the provinces in the earthquake zone, including Malatya, trade and industry experienced significant problems due to the earthquake. In Malatya, the trade and industry sector was forced to suspend its activities for a period of time due to the destruction caused by the earthquake. The industrial sector, which was in better physical condition than the trade sector, entered a rapid recovery process a few months after the earthquake. However, the problems caused by the earthquake-induced destruction and damage in the city negatively affected the recovery process of the industrial sector, as well as many areas where social relations take place.
The Malatya Earthquake and Industry Report aims to systematically compile and document the events that occurred in Malatya's industry following the earthquake. Within this scope, the problems experienced or observed by leading actors in the industrial sector in Malatya have been identified, the actions taken or that should have been taken by public institutions and organizations representing the sector to solve these problems have been determined, and efforts have been made to reveal what needs to be done in the context of improvement activities in the industrial sector.
