BRIEFThis book has been prepared to address the lack of Turkish-language resources in the field ofengineering economics, a sub-discipline of construction management that has been largely neglectedin Turkiye. The book aims to raise awareness of engineering economics by explaining its objectives and practicalbenefits. Engineering education in Turkiye often focuses primarily on compliance with existingspecifications and regulations, which can hinder the development of students’ creative thinking andtheir ability to solve problems through alternative approaches. To address this, many of the solvedexamples in the book compare different solution methods to demonstrate that an engineeringproblem can have multiple viable solutions—an important realization for future engineers.Scenario-based problems are included to help students become better prepared for challenges theymay encounter in their professional careers. Concepts such as the time value of money andpurchasing power are presented at a level that is both accessible to civil engineering students anddirectly applicable in professional practice. Additionally, the book provides economic analysismethods to determine which of several alternatives is the most cost-effective solution to a givenconstruction problem. It is our hope that this book, prepared with the intention of contributing to civil engineers andengineering firms, will broaden perspectives, enhance competitiveness, and support efforts to secureprojects in new international markets.
